So what is the higher standard? Ethylene oxide gas. Manufacturer instructions for use typically list ethylene oxide sterilization as an available and superior method for these devices. It is used throughout the medical device industry to assure the sterility of new devices, and it is the primary method at industrial scale. It is rarely available inside a hospital, and that is unfortunate, because the endpoints are not the same. As the chart shows, ethylene oxide achieves a ten-to-the-minus-twelve reduction in organisms and inactivates spores, roughly a million times the margin of disinfection. When a device will be used on a pediatric or immune-compromised patient, that difference deserves the attention of your infection prevention team.
Here is exactly what happens to your scope. Every endoscope is inspected on arrival and cleaned to the manufacturer's instructions for use. It is inspected again after cleaning, then terminally sterilized with ethylene oxide and returned to you in transport-safe sterile packaging. Complete documentation travels with it, and the sterile package carries a six-month shelf life, so you can hold ready-to-use scopes on your shelf. There is no capital to buy and no new process for your staff to learn.
